Retrofit Heat Pump Case Study In Exeter.

Project Overview:

The team embarked on a significant energy efficiency upgrade project in Exeter, Devon. The task involved the replacement of an outdated gas boiler system with a modern Vaillant Arotherm Plus 12kW air source heat pump. The objective: enhance energy efficiency, slash carbon emissions, and furnish the client with a more sustainable heating solution, which keeps them warm for years to come.

Challenges Faced:

The project posed multifaceted challenges, necessitating innovative solutions. Among these hurdles was the need to redesign and reconfigure the existing radiator system to accommodate a low-temperature heat source. Additionally, adapting the pipework to align with the heat pump's specifications proved a complex challenge. Installing pre-insulated pipe was imperative to position the air source heat pump away from the building, so as not to interfere with access. Furthermore, executing the project within a finished property demanded meticulous care to minimize disruption to the client's routine.

Solution Implemented:

ASME Ltd undertook the project with meticulous planning, care and expert execution. A tailored solution was devised to tackle each challenge head-on. After completing room-by-room heat loss calculations, the installation of the Vaillant 12kW air source heat pump delivered a highly efficient heating system, ensuring optimal warmth and comfort while substantially curbing energy consumption.

To surmount the hurdles related to the existing radiators and pipework, our team skilfully redesigned and reconfigured the heating infrastructure, guaranteeing seamless integration with the new heat pump system, including some pipework alteration. Leveraging pre-insulated pipe facilitated the strategic placement of the air source heat pump, optimizing efficiency without compromising aesthetics or performance.

Project Duration and Outcome: Despite the complexities, ASME Ltd completed the project within approximately two weeks, adhering to the agreed timeline and budget. The client expressed utmost satisfaction, relishing improved heating performance, reduced energy bills, and a diminished environmental footprint.

Conclusion: This Exeter, Devon project exemplifies ASME Ltd.'s dedication to delivering well-designed, innovative, sustainable solutions tailored to our clients' needs. By replacing an outdated gas boiler with a modern air source heat pump, we not only enhanced energy efficiency but also advanced towards a greener, more sustainable future.

Project FAQ’s

  • To maintain confidentiality, we never share our client’s budget with others. If you’d like to discuss your specific project with one of our specialists, we’d be more than happy to provide you with a budgetary indication based on the circumstances of your job.

  • The existing system was based on a gas boiler and the distribution (radiator sizes) where designed to meet the heat requirements at a flow temperature of 65°C. Although heat pumps can achieve these temperatures, they do not so efficiently, so the system was redesigned to suit the new technology.

  • The existing system had the boiler in the Utility Room and the cylinder in a small cupboard upstairs. We altered the pipework to enable us to lay out a full plant area across the back of the garage. There’s still plenty of room left for storage or a car, if required.

  • Yes, you may be eligible for up to £7,500 in grant funding via the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Speak to one of our representatives if you’d like to check your eligibility.
