Case Study

Case Study: Supporting NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) at Colindale

Client: NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT)
Location: Colindale Blood Centre
Services Delivered: Mechanical and Drainage Systems Condition Survey

The Challenge

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) Colindale Blood Centre operates 24/7, providing vital laboratory and clinical services. To ensure reliability, compliance, and energy efficiency across its critical infrastructure, NHSBT required a comprehensive condition survey of its mechanical and drainage systems. This needed to be delivered with minimal disruption to day-to-day operations while providing clear, actionable insights for future planning.

Our Approach

AS Mechanical and Electrical Ltd carried out both intrusive and non-intrusive inspections across Levels 01 and 02 of the centre, with further checks on associated plant and roof-level chillers. Recognising the sensitivity of the site, all surveys were carefully coordinated with NHSBT management, and intrusive works in laboratory spaces were undertaken only with prior approval.

Our team assessed:

  • Mechanical systems including HVAC, air handling units, chillers, pumps, pipework, insulation, and expansion vessels.

  • Drainage systems covering foul, storm, and chemical drainage, as well as separators, interceptors, lift pumps, and water storage.

  • Risk and compliance factors such as Legionella risk indicators, energy efficiency, and statutory compliance.

Emergency defects and safety concerns identified during inspections were immediately flagged to NHSBT for rapid consideration.

Deliverables

On completion, we provided NHSBT with a comprehensive survey report including:

  • An executive summary of key findings and compliance observations.

  • Photographic evidence and detailed commentary on system condition.

  • Clear, prioritised recommendations for repair, upgrade, or replacement.

  • Commentary on system life expectancy.

  • Budget estimates to support financial planning.

The Value

The survey has equipped NHSBT with a clear roadmap for maintaining safe, compliant, and efficient operations across the Colindale Blood Centre. By combining technical expertise with practical, hands-on knowledge, AS Mechanical and Electrical delivered insights that not only highlight risks but also provide realistic, implementable solutions.

For NHSBT, this means improved reliability, enhanced energy performance, and the confidence that future investment decisions are based on robust, evidence-led data.
